Toddler eczema: triggers and a routine that works

Toddlers scratch, drool, sweat and get into everything, which makes eczema harder to control. Here's what's going on and how to get ahead of it.

Where toddler eczema shows up

In babies, eczema often starts on the cheeks and scalp. By the toddler years it tends to move to the creases of the elbows and knees, wrists, ankles, and around the mouth from drooling and eating.

Common toddler triggers

The staph connection

Staph is found on most flaring eczema skin. Its toxins cause redness and itch, and toddlers' scratching opens the skin to more staph. Lowering staph with a hypochlorous acid spray (3–4 times a day, air dry) or a CLn BodyWash in the bath can help break that cycle. Read more about staph and eczema.

A daily routine for toddlers

  1. Bath: short and lukewarm, 5–10 minutes, with a gentle fragrance-free wash.
  2. Lower staph: spray Briotech on clean skin and let it air dry.
  3. Treat flares early: apply any ointment your pediatrician prescribed to red spots the day they appear.
  4. Seal: thick moisturizer like petroleum jelly over everything within 3 minutes.
  5. Night: scratch sleeves, short nails, and a cool room.

Toddler-specific tips

Call your pediatrician the same day for oozing, yellow crusts, fever, painful punched-out sores or blisters, or if itching is keeping your toddler up most nights.
